Marketing That Doesn’t Hurt Anyone. Including You
There’s a lot of talk in the online space about ethical marketing which is great.
But too often, what gets called “ethical” still centers manipulation — just with softer edges.
It’s still built on urgency.
Still built on amplifying pain points.
Still built on strategies designed to trigger action by stirring up shame or fear.
And for many of us — especially those raised to care deeply, to carry emotional labour, or to never make someone uncomfortable — this creates an internal conflict we can’t ignore.
We don’t want to cause harm.
We don’t want to activate someone’s trauma.
We don’t want to make money by making people feel small.
So we do the opposite.
We soften. We over-explain. We post helpful content.
We stop inviting people in.
We tell ourselves it’s better to stay vague and “safe” than risk saying the wrong thing.
But that too keeps us stuck.
Unpaid. Invisible. Quiet. Frustrated.
The truth is: it’s not unethical to sell or use our marketing to sell.
But most of what we’ve been taught about selling is extractive, and that’s what doesn’t sit right.
If we want to create safety in the way that we market and sell, that means feeling safe with ourselves first, keeping ourselves regulated, giving ourselves grace in the way we connect with clients.
We know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of activating, unethical, shame fuelled marketing tactics and we don’t want to make anyone feel like that, because we don’t want to feel like that.
We need a new kind of marketing — one that dissolves pain instead of pressing on it, one that’s designed to connect, not convince.
One that honours our clients agency while also making a clear invitation.
